Liturgical Ministry
We offer a variety of ministries at Mary Star of the Sea.

Contact the Parish Office at (858) 454-2631 to inquire about
serving in any of these areas of ministry:

Ministers of the Word:
Proclamation of the word of God is truly a service to the Church. When the Scriptures are read, God himself is speaking to his people. The ministry of the word requires an understanding of the Scriptures, knowledge of the principles of liturgy, and skill in public reading. Readers are to be fully initiated, practicing Catholics and must undergo the necessary Diocesan training.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion:
Eucharistic Ministers assist the priest with the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ during Mass. In some cases, a minister may also take communion to parishioners who are homebound. Diocesan training is required.

Altar Servers:
The responsibilities of servers include thurifer (incense bearer), cross and candle bearer, and assistance to the priest with the Missal, wine and water. Training is ongoing through the parish.

Ushers:
Ushers assist the worshipping community by greeting and assisting members to their seats. They also collect the offertory and guide the communion procession.

Children’s Liturgy:
The Church recognizes that sometimes, because of children’s inability to participate or to understand what happens and what is proclaimed at Mass, it is appropriate to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word with them in a place apart from the main Sunday assembly. At Mary, Star of the Sea, young children are invited to listen to the liturgy in a form that is geared toward their level. The liturgist leads them using the Lectionary for Masses with Children, and they return to the main church for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
